Nansha Looks to the Sea: The Nansha Hub Turns the One-Hour Bay Area into Everyday Life

The first steel column of the Nansha Station structure was lifted on 17 October 2026; the near-term scope is six platforms and 14 tracks with operation planned for March 2028, and the Shenzhen-Nansha high-speed railway is targeting readiness by the end of September 2027. On the sea side, Nansha Port handled 22.617 million TEU in 2025, with 184 international routes reaching 310 ports. Two networks, land and sea, overlap here and turn the one-hour Bay Area into everyday life.

Guangzhou Nansha Station is one of the most visible projects in this round of Greater Bay Area development. The near-term scope is six platforms and 14 tracks with a station building of about 56,000 square metres, planned to open in March 2028; the long-term plan is 14 platforms and 29 tracks, a scale that will exceed Guangzhou Baiyun Station, with reserved connections for Metro Line 18, Line 15 and a second line for Line 4. On 17 October 2026 the first steel column of the station structure was successfully lifted, taking the main building into substantive construction. The comprehensive development project around it in the Nansha hub area involves a total investment of about RMB 12 billion, with a syndicated loan signed by China Development Bank Guangdong Branch leading a group of banks. Capital has arrived ahead of passengers.

Two Networks Overlap at Nansha

What matters more is the time it cuts. Once the Shenzhen-Jiangmen railway is completed, Qianhai will be within half an hour of Nansha; once the Shenzhen-Nansha high-speed railway opens, Nansha will be about 12 minutes from Shenzhen Airport and about 20 minutes from Shenzhen Xili. The line, about 661 kilometres long with a design speed of 350 km/h, is targeting readiness by the end of September 2027 and committed to readiness before the end of December 2027.

At the other end of the land route is Nansha Port, which has ranked first among single port areas in the Greater Bay Area for several consecutive years. Container throughput in 2025 was 22.617 million TEU, up 10.4% year on year, of which foreign-trade containers were 12.557 million TEU, up 23.5%, with foreign trade accounting for more than half. Its 184 international routes reach more than 120 countries and 310 ports. Phase 5 of Nansha Port, with a total investment of more than RMB 14.4 billion, is under full construction; once complete, the port area's total capacity will reach 35 million TEU. In 2025 Nansha's cross-border e-commerce import and export volume ranked first among China's comprehensive bonded zones for the sixth consecutive year. Nansha's GDP grew 11.2% year on year in the first three quarters of 2026, its third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth.

Two Opportunities for WhySeek

For service businesses that depend on flows of goods and people, this means two concrete opportunities.

First, supply-chain corridors: bulk commodities, fresh and cold-chain goods and cross-border e-commerce now have more stable sea-land intermodal support. A company does not need to build its own port; it only needs to specialise its service to plug into an ever denser network.

Second, compressed time costs: the time it takes inbound visitors and medical travellers to reach Guangzhou has been sharply reduced. Landing at Hong Kong or Shenzhen airport, they can be in Nansha within an hour, and from there reach central Guangzhou and its major medical institutions by intercity rail. WhySeek Health Travel provides consultation and itinerary services for seeking care in China together with traditional Chinese medicine culture experiences (consultation and itinerary arrangement only; it does not provide diagnosis or treatment), and Nansha is an important connecting node on that first leg into the country.

The meaning of a hub has never been only engineering. It turns the one-hour Bay Area from a slogan into everyday life, and it lets a Guangzhou company's service radius, for the first time, genuinely cover the whole Bay Area.
